“The Megan Mae Foundation” is named for Mrs. Megan Mae (Rychwa) Szczepanik.
Megan was born on February 7th, 1984 to John and Donna Rychwa, and welcomed a brother, Eric, in 1988. She graduated from high school in 2002 where she enjoyed success in both academics and athletics. After an equally successful college career she accepted a position with Edward Jones in Charleston and volunteered her free time to run their annual charity golf tournament - raising money and awareness for the Boys & Girls Club of America.
She met Ed Szczepanik in 2009 and they were engaged in March of 2011. Later that same year, Megan was shocked to be diagnosed with a malignant stage three tumor on her brain stem - one month before the wedding. Over the next 20 months Megan would endure two brain surgeries, 32 rounds of radiation, seven different chemotherapy regimens and a newly approved therapy named Novocure - determined to conquer the disease. Her courageous efforts were rewarded with improvement in the summer of 2012, and her medical teams were highly encouraged.
Unfortunately, the cancer returned even more aggressively, and she passed on May 9th 2013, having exhausted every treatment option. Megan never gave up - she had to be told there was nothing more she could do. Her courage, love and selflessness touched everyone who met her or heard her story. She is a Hero to her family, her friends, the community and countless others. Megan’s legacy will live on in the compassion we show for one another and the daily generosity we exhibit in her honor.
Always Remembered…Never Forgotten.
